A survey of the intangible social values of St Kilda’s Pier Kiosk, destroyed by fire in 2003, enriched debate regarding ‘reconstruction’ or, alternatively, ‘contemporary interpretation’. A serendipitous accord between historical and social significance revealed a timeless dimension to its agreed charms, including its setting, ‘perfect’ scale, and its opportunities for affordable gathering, intimacy, or contemplation at civilisation’s frontier.
